Most scholarships are awarded to students with specific commitments, achievements and goals. It is usually tailored for students pursuing a specific field of study, such as engineering, mathematics, biology or literature. In the introductory paragraph, the applicant will be introduced briefly, the scholarship recommended for the applicant will be specified, and the nature and duration of the author’s relationship with the applicant will be described. This sample includes an advisor writing for a student with special financial needs. The author clearly states which scholarship he is recommending for the student and the length and nature of their relationship. In the third sentence, the counselor explained the financial needs of the applicant, but at the same time noted that the student did not allow his difficulties to hinder his education. With this statement, financial aid will only tell the student that he is successful and that he is a good candidate.

In this example, the author (professor) simply indicates the scholarship they are recommending and the nature and length of their relationship with the candidate.
Letters Of Recommendation
In the first paragraph of the letter, the writer will describe how the candidate meets the scholarship criteria. Here, the author can use quantitative examples, such as the applicant’s grades and academic performance, to demonstrate that the applicant is an outstanding student. By demonstrating that they understand the type of candidate the scholarship committee is looking for, the author will make their recommendation more likely to be considered. This paragraph should be approximately 3 to 5 sentences.

In this sample (written by a teacher), the author clearly demonstrates his understanding of the academic guidelines, lists examples of students who have met the criteria, and provides a qualitative assessment of the above student’s academic performance.
